Elegy

Definition: Elegy is a poem or song that expresses sadness, especially for sb who has died


ExampleIf I cried out

           who would hear me up there
    among the angelic orders?
And suppose one suddenly 
           took me to his heart
           I would shrivel

Significance: Elegy can know about the funeral songs or poems 
that expresses the sadness. It will be good to read the poems 
if the people around you had died sadly.

Couplet

Definitioncouplet is a pair of lines of meter in poetry.


ExampleSchool Lunch

Burgers, prunes, and warm spaghetti
To eat this stuff I'm not ready


Significance: You can easily to match the equal length one after the other like the example above the significance.





Alliteration

DefinitionIn languagealliteration refers to the 
repetition of a particular sound in the first syllables 
             of a series of words and/or phrases.


ExampleThree grey geese in a green field grazing,
Grey were the geese and green was the grazing.

Significance: Alliteration can help you concentrate
                         in words and memory skills, too. 

Symbol

Definitionsymbol is something such as an particular mark 
                       that represents some piece of information.


ExampleRose, thou art sick!
The invisible worm
That flies in the night,
In the howling storm,
Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy:
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.


Significance: A literary or contextual symbol can be a
setting, character, action, object, name, or anything else 
in a work that maintains its literal significance while suggesting other meanings.

Speaker

Definition: A person who gives a talk or makes a speech


ExampleSpeak gently! -- It is better far
To rule by love, than fear --
Speak gently -- let not harsh words mar
The good we might do here!


Significance: It is important to read a poem with a loud and clear voice
that the audience will easily to understand what it feels like. 

Interpretation

DefinitionThe facilitation of dialogue between parties using different languages


ExamplePoetry is music in words, hearts poured on paper 
and ideas shared through creative writing. 
To the true poet, printed words may be life itself, 
expressed in originality and unique language.


Significance: When you learn the word interpretation, it means you understood,
So you know the exact meanings of sth and can explain it, too.

Meter

DefinitionIn poetrymeter is the basic rhythmic structure of a verse or lines in verse.


ExampleShall I com PARE thee TO a SUM mer’s DAY?


Significance: Meter is similar to rhythm and can also be the ballad. Meter is depends on how people like but if you do not have meter in your poem, it probably be very bored. 

Metaphor

DefinitionMetaphor is the concept of understanding one thing in terms of another. 


ExampleTime slides
a gentle ocean
waves upon waves,
washing the shore,
loving the shore.

Significance: Metaphor is important because it can show the expression of yourselves and it can also be the figure of speech. 

Tone

Definition: Tone is the pitch and pitch changes in words of certain languages.


ExampleAnd not one but hung limp, not one was left for him to conquer. 
He learned all there was to learn . . . .


Significance: Tone can move other feelings during  reading poem. If you do not have a tone in the poem, 
the meanings can be change in other ways. 
Tone is the important part in the poem. 

Simile

Definitionsimile is a figure of speech that 
indirectly compares two different things by 
employing the words "like", "as", or "than". 


ExampleYour teeth are like stars;
they come out at night.
They come back at dawn
when they're ready to bite. 


SignificanceSimile is when you compare two nouns like places or the people. When you know the word "Simile", you can compare the two things and tell the differences. 

Stanza

DefinitionIn poetry, a stanza is a unit within a larger poem. 
A stanza consists of a grouping of lines
set off by a space, that usually has a set pattern of meter and rhyme.


ExampleDo not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;Rage, rage against the dying of the light


SignificanceStanzas can be identified and grouped together because they share a rhyme. Also, stanza have lots of repeated words or sentence so can easier to understand and think. 

Imagery

DefinitionImagery is the use of bright description, usually rich in sensory words, to create pictures, or images, in the reader's mind.


ExampleLet us go then, you and I, 
When the evening is spread out against the sky 
Like a patient etherised upon a table; 
Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets, 
The muttering retreats 
Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels 
And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells


Significance: Imagery is really important to learn, 
because when you think of an one poem,
 you can easily think of many pictures in your mind. 
It can develop your creativity and can think deeply.

Personification

Definition: Personification is a existence figure of speech in which a thing or abstraction is represented as a person.

Example: All the world is a stage.
               And, all the people have their own 
             hope. If people have their dreams 
               and hope,someday their stage would be really bright and precious.

Significance: Personification is a poem that usually a person who has a lot of particular quality or characteristic but it can be really helpful for others to have a lot of experience or feelings for themselves.
